McCains of Birkdale became established selling Motor Cars from their Upper Aughton road premises over 51 years ago. The business was founded by Donald (Ginger) McCain the racehorse trainer who trained the legendary Red Rum to win 3 Grand Nationals and be second twice all within a five year period 1973-1977. This amazing feat has never been repeated and racing scholars believe it will remain so. Red Rum was trained on Southport sands and was stabled in the yard behind the car showroom in Upper Aughton Road along with 21 other racehorses and Ginger operated both businesses from these premises.
In 1990 the increased demand for more stable space resulted in a split in business operations.
The Racing side of the business moving to the impressive Bank House Stables in Cheshire where Gingers son Donald McCain Junior has now taken over the mantle with a string of over 100 horses in training.
